The Hard Water Problem in Tri-Cities
Does Your Home Have a Hard Water Problem?
Yes — the water in Kennewick, Pasco, and Richland is hard. Municipal supply drawn from the Columbia River basin picks up calcium and magnesium from mineral-rich volcanic geology. If any of the signs below are familiar, your home would benefit from a softener.
-
Scale on Fixtures
White crusty buildup on faucets and showerheads is calcium depositing from your supply line.
-
Spots on Dishes
Cloudy glasses and spotted dishes even after a full wash cycle are a reliable hard water tell.
-
Low Water Pressure
Scale accumulates inside pipes over time, gradually restricting flow throughout the home.
-
Water Heater Struggling
Scale inside the tank forces it to work harder — raising bills and shortening its life.
-
Dry Skin & Stiff Laundry
Hard water minerals bind with soap, leaving residue on skin, hair, and fabric.
-
New Build, No Loop
If your builder didn't rough in a softener loop, now is the right time to add one.

Frequently Asked Questions
Have Questions About Water Softeners Installation or Repair
Straight answers to what we hear most. Don't see yours? If you don't see yours, call — we'll talk you through it honestly before you make any decisions.
Does Tri-Cities have hard water?
Yes. Water in the Tri-Cities runs hard — the local water supply passes through mineral-rich geology on its way to your tap, and that's what drives the buildup. A whole-home water softener is one of the best fixes for it.
What factors affect the cost of water softener installation?
The main variables are whether your home already has a softener loop stubbed in, how accessible the install location is, and whether you're supplying your own unit or having us source one. A home with an existing loop is a straightforward hookup. A home without one requires either retrofitting a loop or connecting directly to the nearest supply lines — both doable, just more labor. We assess your specific setup and give you a clear quote before any work starts.
What is a water softener loop, and do I need one?
A softener loop is a pair of capped supply line connections stubbed out in a utility area during new construction. It means connecting a water softener later is a straightforward hookup rather than a wall-opening retrofit. Most new Tri-Cities homes should have one — not all builders include it. If yours doesn't, we can add a retrofit loop or connect the softener directly to your existing supply lines depending on your setup.
How long does a water softener last?
A quality ion-exchange softener typically lasts 10–15 years. The main ongoing task is keeping the brine tank stocked with salt — most households refill every 6–8 weeks. With the right unit size and regular salt top-offs, you shouldn't need to touch much else.
Can a plumber install a water softener I already bought?
Yes. We'll hook up a unit you've purchased from a big-box store, plumbing supplier, or previous home. If you haven't bought one yet and want our advice on sizing for your household, just ask — we'll point you in the right direction before you spend money on the wrong unit.
My water softener isn't working right. Can you repair it?
Yes. Most softener problems are repairable without replacing the whole unit. Common issues we fix: salt bridges in the brine tank (a hard crust that stops regeneration), control valve failures, worn resin that's no longer removing hardness, and connection or bypass valve leaks. If your softener is running through salt too fast, putting out hard water, or not regenerating on schedule, call us — we'll diagnose it and tell you honestly whether it's worth repairing or time to replace.
Does a water softener affect drinking water taste?
Ion-exchange softeners replace hardness minerals with a small amount of sodium. Most people don't notice a taste difference, but if you're on a sodium-restricted diet it matters. A simple fix: we can leave one cold-water tap unsoftened for drinking and cooking. We can also discuss adding a reverse osmosis filter at the kitchen sink if you want fully treated drinking water. We'll walk you through the options during installation.

Don't take our word for it — here's what Tri-Cities homeowners and businesses are saying on Google.
Thank you Columbia Basin Plumbing for the excellent service. We had a leak under our kitchen sink that we just couldn't locate. You were able to get out next day and take care of the problem.
Travis quickly found and fixed our water leak. But even more impressive was him crawling on his belly in a very narrow crawl space to get to the leak. We are very thankful and happy for the services at Columbia Basin Plumbing.
I had a valve on my hot water tank that needed attention in my Pasco rental. I’ve worked with Columbia Basin in the past through a previous place of employment. They are a great referral partner! Megan, the owner, was prompt with getting someone scheduled and out to the house. She’s very nice to speak with and I think Lee resolved my problem for my renters! Thanks Megan & Lee!
We love this family business! They came to our rescue at our business when we needed them the most. Excellent customer service, fair pricing, honesty and integrity. Highly recommended!
Very knowledgeable staff! Went above and beyond my expectations of customer service and experienced staff. Would recommend them to all my friends and family!
I highly recommend Columbia basin plumbing. Had an emergency after a pipe burst after a cold night. They were able to schedule me same day and fixed the issue with ease. Competitive prices had me charged hundreds less than I was expecting so I am especially grateful for that. Tyler was my laborer, good dude very good customer service explained and broke everything down easily for me to understand. I will definitely be calling them back for any plumbing issues in the future
Had them out for a dishwasher install. Went very smoothly, plumber showed up on time and did very clean work. I was able to get scheduled next day. Very happy and highly recommended.
They were able to come check out our hot water heater and replace it within 24 hours of us calling them, very responsive and reasonably priced! Would absolutely recommend!

This is the second time we've used Columbia Basin Plumbing and both times we've had excellent service. The first was to install new faucets throughout the house, a garbage disposal, and the second time was to install a new hot water tank. The price has always been reasonable. The guys that do the work have always been extremely professional. They have my business for life.
They responded and fixed my problem quickly, and for a great price!
I was dreading calling a plumber as I have never had to. Fast, friendly, excellent work at a price less than I had anticipated.
So grateful for Columbia Basin Plumbing. The office staff was so kind and understanding and great at communicating and getting our repair scheduled on a Friday afternoon. The plumber who came out was friendly and had us fixed up in no time along with some great advice for future repairs/projects.
I can't begin to say how impressed I am with Columbia Basin Plumbing! From the first second on the phone with Megan, all the way through finishing the job, they were courteous, knowledgeable, professional, reasonable, and do great work. They handled an entire replumb for us on an older manufactured home in a timely manner at a fair price. We are 100% satisfied and will use them in the future!
I gave them 5 stars even though there was a time hang up which is understandable. The gentlemen that came out was very professional and polite. He answered any questions I had and explained what needed to be done. They do charge one hour labor minimum which is typical but they would have been done in 20 mins... So the time hang up was the service man ran out of access panels and was gone for almost an hour running around town locating one to buy. This wasn't that big of a deal with me since I had no plans, but should be addressed in the review as it could be an issue if someone was on a time restraint. Their pricing I believe is fair they where less than half the amount Mr. Rooter wanted to charge. Overall, great experience.
Absolutely Amazing, Hero's I'd say, I needed my water heater installed and had called 20 other places before reaching them, by far the best customer service I've ever had, they squeezed me in the same day and got the job done! Would call them again if I ever need services. Thanks again to the Columbia Basin Plumbing Team.
I cant say enough good things anout them. They really care. They actually went out of their way to not only do a good job for a fair price but helped me deal with the results of a nightmare plumber who left me in a bad pinch. They moved their schedule around and made it happen. Theyre not just a great company... theyre genuinely caring... nice people.
Tyler was professional and faced with a very complicated issue. He kept on in very trying conditions until the situation was solved. Thank you!
Awesome company! Helped me over the phone no charge until we felt we found the problem! Thanks Jason!
I have used Columbia Basin Plumbing for multiple project big and small, every single time the work is completed on time and within budget. They are very knowledgeable and professional, I would highly recommend them for all your plumbing needs.
I can not give Columbia Basin Plumbing a good enough review! We had our newest grandson coming to visit our home for the first time and our water heater went out the night before. Both my wife and I were in a panic! We called Columbia Basin Plumbing and were connected to Jason. He assured us he would have everything taken care of for us first thing in the morning. Jason came out to our house at 8:00 the next morning, (a Sunday on top of all of this,) diagnosed, changed out, cleaned up, and left in under two hours! Not only was the customer service fantastic, the price was less than half what we expected. I wholeheartedly recommend Jason and his whole team at Columbia Basin Plumbing for whatever plumbing needs you have! We are very thankful to see there are still those contractors out there willing to sacrifice their personal time to make sure their customers needs are taken care of.
They were able to send somebody out the same day we called. The plumber, Tyler, was on time, fixed my issue, and was polite and courteous. The pricing was clear and fair. I would recommend them and will use this company for future issues.
Spoke to Donna and she was super attentive to my situation and scheduled an appointment for the following day. Next day Jeremiah arrived on time and went right to work figuring out the toilet drain back problem. He was excellent and worked fast and was extremely knowledgeable about what was being done. For a bad situation it was a pleasure having Jeremiah figure it all out and great attitude. Thank you Columbia Basin Plumbing.
Excellent work at a fair price from honest, helpful, and friendly staff. Never trust a 1 star review of this company. Any future plumbing work will start with a call to these guys

Did a great job. Was there when I need someone fast. Kitchen drain plugged, was very fast and a very nice guy. Very affordable. Cleaned up the mess and was like I hadn't even had a problem with my drain.
Megan and Jason are by far the most professional and efficient business owners I've met in a long time. Each time we have called them to our house Jason has been there within the day or two. If somthing comes up Megan is quick to stay in touch as to when they will be out. I completely trust the work they do as well as their word and that says a lot. If your looking for honest, proficient, affordable work. These guys put they're whole hearts into what they do. Look no further!!! Thanks for everything, Maraiah and Justin
My husband and I were in the middle of moving and had our shower head break off in the wall and we just didn't have time to fix it our selves...
